If your phone or tablet is constantly too hot, it can be bad for the battery and uncomfortable to use. But, there are some simple ways to cool things down.
In laymen’s terms, hot weather could land you with a faulty iPhone, iPad or Android device. Though it takes more than a bit of sun to send any mobile haywire; the following increase the risks of a hot phone or tablet:
Leaving your iPhone/iPad/Android device in a car
Leaving your phone or tablet in direct sunlight
Using GPS navigation via Google Maps or a sat nav app
Playing a graphics-intensive app or game
Fortunately, there are some simple solutions for an overheating tablet or phone:
Keep your phone or tablet away from heat sources
Using a mobile phone or tablet in hot climates can often deplete its battery life more quickly. This can be especially true if it’s heating up in the sun. Wherever possible, try not to use a tablet or phone in direct, hot sunshine. Don’t leave your devices in a hot car, either.
Be careful with thick plastic cases or leather- bound cases, too. Many phones and tablets are designed to dissipate heat through their chassis; the case may be keeping the heat locked in. Try taking it out of its case for a while to cool off.
Restart your hot phone or tablet
Overheating can be a sign that your tablet or phone is working too hard. Often, you can cure this simply by performing a power cycle. Switch it off completely, then turn it back on. For example on an iPhone or iPad, hold the power button down until you see the Slide to power off message. Swipe this, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Apps running in the background can add to a phone or tablet’s workload. To close apps on an iPhone or iPad, double-tap on the Home button and swipe each open app off-screen. On Android devices, tap the square button, then tap the X icon on each app you want to close.
The brighter your screen, the hotter your device can get. Try turning down the brightness until your phone or tablet cools.
If your phone is hunting for a network signal in an area with poor reception, it can heat up. As a quick fix to let it cool down again, switch on the airplane mode. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen for this option on an iPhone, or down from the top of the screen on Android.
Overheating can be due to a faulty battery. If it’s happening often, you should contact your manufacturer as soon as possible for a repair or replacement. Make sure to back up your data before sending your device away.
