iOS 14: Apple Changing How It Develops Its Software After Buggy iOS 13 Debut

Apple is overhauling how it tests software after a swarm of bugs marred the latest iPhone and iPad operating systems, according to people familiar with the shift. Software chief Craig Federighi and lieutenants including Stacey Lysik announced the changes at a recent internal “kickoff” meeting with the company’s software developers. The new approach calls for Apple’s development teams to ensure that test versions, known as “daily builds,” of future software updates disable unfinished or buggy features by default. Testers will then have the option to selectively enable those features, via a new internal process and settings menu dubbed Flags, allowing them to isolate the impact of each individual addition on the system.

When the company’s iOS 13 was released alongside the iPhone 11 in September, iPhone owners and app developers were confronted with a litany of software glitches. Apps crashed or launched slowly. Cellular signal was inconsistent. There were user interface errors in apps like Messages, system-wide search issues and problems loading emails. Some new features, such as sharing file folders over iCloud and streaming music to multiple sets of AirPods, were either delayed or are still missing. This amounted to one of the most troubled and unpolished operating system updates in Apple’s history.

“iOS 13 continues to destroy my morale,” Marco Arment, a well known developer, wrote on Twitter. “Same,” replied Jason Marr, co-creator of grocery list app AnyList. “Apple’s really shown a lack of respect for both its developers and its customers with iOS 13.”

The issues show how complex iPhones have become and how easily users can be disappointed by a company known for the smooth integration of hardware and software. Annual software updates timed for release with the latest iPhones are a critical way for Apple to add new capabilities and keep users from defecting to archrival Android. Refreshed operating systems also give developers more tools for app creation, catalyzing more revenue for Apple from its App Store.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined to comment.

The new development process will help early internal iOS versions to be more usable, or “livable,” in Apple parlance. Prior to iOS 14’s development, some teams would add features every day that weren’t fully tested, while other teams would contribute changes weekly. “Daily builds were like a recipe with lots of cooks adding ingredients,” a person with knowledge of the process said.

Test software got so crammed with changes at different stages of development that the devices often became difficult to use. Because of this, some “testers would go days without a livable build, so they wouldn’t really have a handle on what’s working and not working,” the person said. This defeated the main goal of the testing process as Apple engineers struggled to check how the operating system was reacting to many of the new features, leading to some of iOS 13’s problems.

Apple measures and ranks the quality of its software using a scale of 1 to 100 that’s based on what’s known internally as a “white glove” test. Buggy releases might get a score in the low 60s whereas more stable software would be above 80. iOS 13 scored lower on that scale than the more polished iOS 12 that preceded it. Apple teams also assign green, yellow and red color codes to features to indicate their quality during development. A priority scale of 0 through 5, with 0 being a critical issue and 5 being minor, is used to determine the gravity of individual bugs.

The new strategy is already being applied to the development of iOS 14, codenamed “Azul” internally, ahead of its debut next year. Apple has also considered delaying some iOS 14 features until 2021 – in an update called “Azul +1” internally that will likely become known as iOS 15 externally – to give the company more time to focus on performance. Still, iOS 14 is expected to rival iOS 13 in the breadth of its new capabilities, the people familiar with Apple’s plans said.

The testing shift will apply to all of Apple’s operating systems, including iPadOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS. The latest Mac computer operating system, macOS Catalina, has also manifested bugs such as incompatibility with many apps and missing messages in Mail. Some HomePod speakers, which run an iOS-based operating system, stopped working after a recent iOS 13 update, leading Apple to temporarily pull the upgrade. The latest Apple Watch and Apple TV updates, on the other hand, have gone more smoothly.

Apple executives hope that the overhauled testing approach will improve the quality of the company’s software over the long term. But this isn’t the first time that Apple engineers have heard this from management.

Last year, Apple delayed several iOS 12 features – including redesigns for CarPlay and the iPad home screen – specifically so it could focus on reliability and performance. At an all-hands meeting in January 2018, Federighi said the company had prioritized new features too much and should return to giving consumers the quality and stability that they wanted first.

Apple then established so-called Tiger Teams to address performance issues in specific parts of iOS. The company reassigned engineers from across the software division to focus on tasks such as speeding up app launch times, improving network connectivity and boosting battery life. When iOS 12 came out in the fall of 2018, it was a stable release that required just two updates in the first two months.

That success didn’t carry over to this year. The initial version of iOS 13 was so buggy that Apple has had to rush out several patches. In the first two months of iOS 13, there have been eight updates, the most since 2012 when Federighi took over Apple’s iOS software engineering group. The company is currently testing another new version, iOS 13.3, and there’s already a follow-up in the works for the spring.

About a month before Apple’s 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the company’s software engineers started to realize that iOS 13, then known internally as “Yukon,” wasn’t performing as well as previous versions. Some people who worked on the project said development was a “mess.”

By August, realizing that the initial iOS 13.0 set to ship with new iPhones a few weeks later wouldn’t hit quality standards, Apple engineers decided to mostly abandon that work and focus on improving iOS 13.1, the first update. Apple privately considered iOS 13.1 the “actual public release” with a quality level matching iOS 12. The company expected only die-hard Apple fans to load iOS 13.0 onto their phones.

The timing of the iOS 13.1 update was moved up by a week to Sept. 24, compressing the time that iOS 13.0 was Apple’s flagship OS release. New iPhones are so tightly integrated with Apple software that it would have been technically impossible to launch the iPhone 11 with iOS 12, and since 13.1 wasn’t ready in time, Apple’s only choice was to ship with 13.0 and update everyone to 13.1 as quickly as it could.

While the iOS 13 issues did upset iPhone owners, they still updated fairly quickly. As of mid-October, half of all Apple device users were running a version of iOS 13, according to Apple. That upgrade pace is still far ahead of Google’s Android.

Once iOS 13.1 was released, Apple’s software engineering division pivoted to iOS 13.2 with a quality goal of being better than iOS 12. This update has had fewer complaints than its predecessors in the iOS 13 family but did introduce a short-lived bug around apps closing in the background when they shouldn’t.

“iOS 13 has felt like a super-messy release, something we haven’t seen this bad since iOS 8 or so,” Steve Troughton-Smith, a veteran developer of Apple apps, wrote on Twitter.

Apple Supplier to Buy Nokia’s Chennai Plant, Will Invest $279 Million

Finland’s Salcomp, a supplier to US tech group Apple, is to invest Rs. 2,000 crores in India to make mobile chargers and other smartphone components from March 2020, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Monday. Salcomp has reached an agreement to take over a facility, formerly owned by Nokia, in Chennai and will begin operations at the site by March, Ravi Shankar Prasad told a news conference. Salcomp, a major supplier of chargers to Apple for its iPhones, has reached an agreement to take over the entire facility of Nokia handsets lying closed for the past so many years, Prasad said.

“I can tell you apart from chargers and other equipment it will lead to a diversified product portfolio,” Prasad said, adding that Salcomp would invest the Rs. 2,000 crores at the site over the next five years.

The move is expected to generate jobs for about 10,000 people, he said.

Nokia, in a statement, confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Salcomp for the sale of the facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai.

The widening of Apple’s supplier base in India, the world’s second-biggest smartphone market, is a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” drive.

India has been trying to take advantage of the trade war between Beijing and Washington, which has disrupted supply chains and forced companies to look for alternative manufacturing locations.

New Delhi cut corporate tax rates in September to woo manufacturers and revive private investment. It is also making plans to attract companies such as Apple, Foxconn, and Wistron to expand locally, Reuters reported previously.

Apple last month started selling its iPhone XR model assembled in India by the local unit of Foxconn It also assembles the iPhone 7 model in India through Wistron’s local unit in the tech hub of Bengaluru.

On Monday, Prasad, showing a locally-assembled iPhone XR, said he expected Apple to expand its manufacturing operations further in India.

Apple’s Indian-made phones will also be exported, Prasad said, adding that exports of mobile phones and components from the country would be worth $1.6 billion (roughly Rs. 11,500 crores) each in the financial year to end-March 2020.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Get One UI 2.0 Beta Program in India to Offer Android 10

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users in India can now experience One UI 2.0 based on Android 10. The South Korean company has kicked off its One UI 2.0 Beta Program in the country to let the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ see all the changes that are planned for next year. Alongside the expansion in India, Samsung has started allowing its users in South Korea to start enrolling in the One UI 2.0 Beta Program for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The One UI Beta Program to test the Android 10 update was initially launched for the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e.

To enrol in the One UI 2.0 Beta Program, you need to install the Samsung Members app from where you’ll see the notice about the Android 10 release for your Samsung Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+. You simply need to tap the image available on the notice to register for the beta programme and then receive the update on your device.

Gadgets 360 was able to confirm the One UI Beta Program notice on the Samsung Members app in India. SamMobile reports that the update has also reached the South Korean market. Further, the Android 10 update package is around 1.8GB in size.

Users are recommended to back up their personal data before enrolling for the One UI 2.0 Beta Program.

While the One UI Beta Program is live for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users to let them experience One UI 2.0 along with Android 10, Samsung would take some time to bring the stable update. A roadmap from Israel recently suggested that the 2018 flagship could receive the Android 10 update sometime in April next year.

To recall, Samsung initially launched the One UI 2.0 Beta Program for the Galaxy S10 series last month. It reached India along with a range of custom changes shortly after its formal launch.

Windows 10 Updates Blocked for Avast, AVG Antivirus Users

Microsoft has blocked updates to Windows 10 for some users who have antivirus tools running on their systems from top cyber-security firm Avast and its subsidiary AVG. Some users trying to update to the recently released “Build 1909” or November 2019 Update to Windows 10 found that there’s no update to install if they’re running AVG or Avast in the background, the Inquirer reported on Monday.

image

According to the tech giant, it has found a compatibility issue between the free antivirus tools and Windows.

“Microsoft and Avast has identified compatibility issues with some versions of Avast Antivirus and AVG Antivirus. Any application from Avast or AVG that contains Antivirus version 19.5.4444.567 or earlier is affected,” read the issues page for Windows 10.

To get around the block, users will need to download and install an updated version of Avast or AVG.

This is the first time Microsoft has reported a compatibility block for AVG and Avast.

Avast acquired AVG in 2016. Both AVG and Avast have released support pages on the issue.

Microsoft has also issues a compatibility block on Windows 10 updates for versions 1903, 1909, and 1809, due a compatibility problem with certain Qualcomm Wi-Fi drivers.

Intel Partners With MediaTek to Bring 5G Support to Laptops

In a bid to bring its new 5G modem to PCs, MediaTek is partnering with Intel, the Taiwanese chipmaker said on Monday. Dell and HP are expected to be among the first original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to deliver laptops powered by Intel and MediaTek’s 5G solution. The first rollout of devices is expected for early 2021, MediaTek said.

image

Through this partnership, Intel has been working with MediaTek on the 5G solution for deployment in key consumer and commercial laptop segments.

MediaTek is developing the 5G modem and working with partners to manufacture the solution.

“Our 5G modem for PCs, developed in partnership with Intel, is integral to making 5G accessible and available across home and mobile platforms,” said MediaTek President Joe Chen.

“With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, but we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined,” Chen said.

MediaTek’s new 5G modem for PCs is based in part on its Helio M70 5G modem it introduced earlier this year as part of its integrated 5G system-on-chip for the first wave of 5G flagship smartphones.

“5G is poised to unleash a new level of computing and connectivity that will transform the way we interact with the world,” said Gregory Bryant, Intel Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group.

“Intel’s partnership with MediaTek brings together industry leaders with deep engineering, system integration and connectivity expertise to deliver 5G experiences on the next generation of the world’s best PCs,” Bryant said.

Realme X50 With Dual-Mode 5G Support Confirmed to Launch Soon, Sports Hole-Punch Design With Two Selfie Cameras

Realme announced its plans to launch 5G phones earlier this year, and also indicated that it will be among the first brands to bring 5G-ready phones to the market. Realme has now revealed the name of its first 5G phone – the Realme X50 – that will be launched soon. The Realme X50 will offer support for dual-mode NSA and SA 5G network, just like the upcoming Redmi K30 5G. Moreover, it will sport a pill-shaped hole-punch on the front that will house dual selfie cameras.

Realme’s Chief Marketing Officer, Xu Qi Chase, revealed in a Weibo post that Realme X50 will be the company’s first 5G phone. The upcoming Realme phone will offer support for both 5G Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) networks, or to put it simply, dual-mode 5G connectivity support. But neither the Realme executive nor the company itself, have revealed whether the Realme X50 will rely on a MediaTek SoC or a Qualcomm SoC to offer 5G support.

Back in September, Realme announced plans to launch 5G phones powered by Qualcomm’s 5G-ready Snapdragon 700-series processors. While the aforementioned chipset is yet to go official, rumours swirling around the leak arena suggest that the Snapdragon 735 SoC might be among the first non-flagship Qualcomm processors to offer 5G support. While Xiaomi’s Redmi K30 5G has been confirmed to launch in December, there is no word when the Realme X50 will debut and arrive in India. However, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth promised earlier this year that 5G phones from the company will be launched in India later in 2019, so we expect an announcement later this month or in December.

The poster shared by Chase on Weibo also shows the silhouette of Realme X50. It is worth noting that the phone is depicted sporting a pill-shaped hole-punch on the display that houses dual selfies cameras. The hole-punch on the Realme X50 is in the top-left corner of the display. In comparison, Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi K30 5G will also pack a dual hole-punch design, but the selfie sensors are located on the top-right corner of the display.

Realme Details ColorOS 7 Release Roadmap for Its Smartphones, Realme X2 Pro to Get ColorOS 7 Beta From December 18

Oppo is all set to launch ColorOS 7, its new custom skin based on Android 10, in India on November 26. Meanwhile, Realme smartphones will also be getting a more customised version of ColorOS 7, which is due to roll out in first quarter of 2020. Now, Realme has officially unveiled its roadmap for ColorOS 7 for its entire smartphone lineup, which begins in January 2020. Whats more, Realme X2 Pro users will be able to get a sneak-peek with the beta version of ColorOS 7 from December 18. The stable rollout of ColorOS 7 will begin from January and extend all the way till Q3 2020.

image

The official press release from Realme states that this customised version of ColorOS 7 should bring smoother gaming graphics, better RAM management more customisation options for video and vlogging. Some of these customisations include the ability to change app icons, shape and size and the font. There’ll also be a system-wide dark mode. Realme has also teased that user can expect some “special features” which will be closer to the stock Android experience but hasn’t specified what these actually are.

The beta programme for ColorOS 7 will begin from November 27, specifically for the Realme X2 Pro. You’ll have to fill in an application form on the Realme community page, for a chance to be recruited for the beta testing programme. Also, beta testers from Realme X2 Pro, Project X, and Realme XT ColorOS 6.7 beta will also be given a chance to try ColorOS 7, provided you’ve “proven” yourself worthy. Realme will announce the final list of beta testers on December 9, followed by the actual testing program which commences from December 18 to February 2020.

As for the roadmap for the stable release, the Realme 3 Pro and Realme XT will be among the first phones to receive ColorOS 7 starting in January 2020. In February, the Realme X (Review) and Realme 5 Pro (Review) will receive it, followed by the Realme X2 Pro in March. The Realme 3 (Review) and Realme 3i (Review) will get it in April, followed by the Realme 5 (Review) and Realme 5s in May, the Realme 2 Pro (Review) in June and finally, the Realme C2 (Review) sometime in Q3 2020.

Realme India CEO, Madhav Sheth, has repeatedly mentioned that ColorOS 7 for Realme phones will be closer to stock Android, which means some of these features won’t be found on ColourOS for Oppo phones. But what about the mythical RealmeOS that we’ve been hearing rumours about? Well, this next version will essentially be RealmeOS, even though it won’t be actually called that. In a recent #AskMadhav episode on YouTube, Sheth answers popular queries from the community and one of the burning questions was, when will RealmeOS launch? Sheth categorically states that Realme phones will continue to be based on ColorOS but the next version (ColourOS 7), will be contain exclusive features only for Realme phones which have been incorporated based on user feedback. He further reaffirms that it will be much closer to a stock Android experience too.

In China, Realme will be launching an “early adopter” version of the Realme X2 Pro on December 18, which coincides with the start of the beta program in India.

Is Realme X2 Pro the OnePlus 7T killer you’ve been waiting for? We discussed this on Orbital, our weekly technology podcast, which you can subscribe to via Apple Podcasts or RSS, download the episode, or just hit the play button below.

Half-Life: Alyx Arrives in March Next Year, Pre-Orders Now Live on Steam

Valve has finally dropped the first trailer of Half-Life: Alyx, a new VR-exclusive game that carries forward the Half-Life franchise. But not chronologically though, as Half-Life: Alyx is set between the first Half-Life game and Half-Life 2. Valve has also revealed that Half-Life: Alyx will be out on Steam in March next year. Additionally, the developer has revealed minimum PC system requirements for enjoying its next game, and just to be clear, we are talking about hardware requirements for the PC that will be connected to the VR headset.

Half-Life: Alyx will hit Steam in March 2020 and can be played on the Valve Index VR headset. However, it is also playable using third-party VR headsets such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, and even those that run on the Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) platform. Half-Life: Alyx is now up for pre-order on Steam at Rs. 1,169 in India, but the game’s regular price is apparently Rs. 1,299. However, people who already own the Valve Index VR headset will get it for free.

Coming to the Half-Life launch trailer, it is simply gorgeous. The attention to detail is excellent, the setting is as scary as you would expect from the series, and there appears to be a lot of space for interaction with items in the surroundings. And to top it all off, the mysterious G-man makes a sinister cameo at the end of the game. Valve has made it clear that Half-Life: Alyx is set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, so if you are hoping for a closure to the cliffhanger at the end of Half-Life 2’s second chapter, you’re in for a disappointment.

Valve has also revealed the PC requirements for Half-Life: Alyx. Just to be clear, you’ll first have to buy a VR headset to play the game, if you already don’t have one. And then, you might have to upgrade your PC if it doesn’t match the minimum hardware requirements specified by Valve. Here are the minimum system requirements for Half-Life: Alyx-

Operating System: Windows 10
Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 – 6GB VRAM
You can check more details about Half-Life: Alyx on the game’s Steam listing page here. But there is some good news for Half-Life fans who would want Valve to continue the series after the debut of Half-Life: Alyx. “Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how people react to Half-Life: Alyx once it’s out, but we’d love to continue pushing forward”, Valve’s David Speyrer tells was quoted as saying by The Verge. So yes, there are chances that we might see the Half-Life series expand further.
