Intel has unveiled its first discrete graphics card, but you won’t be able to buy one. The unit is for developers only, and will be seeded throughout the industry to allow software makers to get an idea of how to optimise their work for Intel’s new Xe graphics architecture. The card is an implementation of the DG1 GPU, which will be Intel’s first discrete GPU, slated to launch this year. The move shows that Intel is very close to releasing graphics products, although we don’t yet know what form they will take. Intel was quick to emphasise that no conclusions should be drawn from the appearance or performance level of the card being demonstrated, and that it is not necessarily an indication of what any upcoming retail product will be like.
Intel has been on a years-long journey to completely reboot its graphics capabilities. The Xe architecture will find its way into the integrated GPUs within Intel CPUs starting with the 10nm Tiger Lake generation, which is set to launch later this year. Intel has also promised to launch discrete GPUs, and will be targeting all levels from ultra-mobile devices to gaming, workstation, data centre servers, and high-performance acceleration.
The company is not yet ready to disclose timelines, specifications, performance targets, or any other concrete details, but the launch of the developer kit should inspire confidence in the industry. Intel showed the device running gameplay demos at CES, but would not comment on whether or not this represents the performance of a final shipping product. Intel also had laptops with functioning DG1 discrete GPUs at the show, but only shown under glass, and was not offering hands-on demos.
Intel has said that DG1 will be tuned for power efficiency but will be capable of supporting gaming and content creation workloads. The development kit with its dual-slot cooler will of course not be as thermally constrained as a GPU running within a thin-and-light laptop chassis. Software and driver support is also not yet final.
The DG1 kit has a metal shroud with a fairly elaborate design and RGB LEDs for show, but the company would also not comment on whether final shipping products will have the same look. It has three DisplayPorts and one HDMI port, like many consumer graphics cards. Notably, it has no PCIe power connectors, indicating that total power draw is within the 75W that PCIe slots can provide.
Intel began publicising its work on a completely reinvented graphics product stack in 2017, and hired several high-profile executives and engineers from the industry including AMD’s graphics chief, Raja Koduri. The company has been courting gamers and fans through its Odyssey series of events and social media engagements.

More than 50 organisations have asked Google to take action against Android vendors who pre-install “exploitative” apps aka bloatware on their devices. In an open letter submitted to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the group of organisations that include search engine company and Google rival DuckDuckGo and nonprofit organisation The Tor Project have shown their concerns over vulnerabilities that users face due to pre-installed apps that cannot be deleted and collect, share, and expose their private data without prior knowledge or consent.
The signees have highlighted that pre-installed apps can come with “privileged custom permissions” that allow them to operate outside the default security model provided by Android.
“We are concerned that this leaves users vulnerable to the exploitative business practices of cheap smartphone manufacturers around the world,” the signees wrote in the open letter that has been signed by a total of 53 organisations.
The letter also cites a research conducted by experts back in March 2018 that showed as much as 91 percent of all tested pre-installed apps weren’t available on Google Play, despite the fact that the phones used for testing had Google Play Protect for security.
Google have been asked to impose new rules on Android vendors to restrict bloatware. The organisations in the letter urged Pichai to let individuals permanently uninstall the apps on their phones and bring pre-installed apps adhere to the same scrutiny as the apps available for download through Google Play. Further, they have mentioned that pre-installed apps should have update mechanism through Google Play without a user account, and Google shall refuse to certify a device on privacy grounds where it find manufacturers or vendors have attempted to exploit users through bloatware.
“We, the undersigned, believe these fair and reasonable changes would make a huge difference to millions of people around the world who should not have to trade their privacy and security for access to a smartphone,” the signees said in the letter.
The group of signees include various universities, privacy groups, consumer protection bodies, and journalism organisations. It is led by London-based charity Privacy International. Moreover, a petition page has been provided to let individuals and smartphone users add their voice to the campaign by signing up a petition.

Back in December, Huawei confirmed that it will be launching the Huawei P40 series in March this year, sans Google’s apps and services. Immediately after, we began getting a series of leaks and readers of what the P40 and P40 Pro could look like. Today, we have yet another leak from a case manufacturer which gives us a clear look at the alleged Huawei P40 Pro. The render shows the phone having a pill-shaped hole-punch display in the front and a total of five camera sensors at the back. The design of the camera layout also looks very similar to the first render we saw back in December.
The images posted on Chinese networking site Weibo, gives us different angles of the supposed Huawei P40 Pro. The shot of the front of the phone shows it having slim bezels all around but instead of a notch, we have a hole-punch cutout for two front cameras, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10+. The render also shows the phone having a noticeable forehead and the top of the rubber case having a little lip to cover the section up, which means we doubt there would be additional sensors in that panel.
Another image shows the Huawei P40 Pro case from all angles, which reveals protection for the physical buttons on the right, a cutout for the USB Type-C port and speaker at the bottom and two cutouts for on the top, seemingly for the microphones or an IR blaster and a microphone. The back has a large rectangular cutout for the camera models and additional sensors. The shape of this cutout is very similar to the leak from Onleaks back in December, which didn’t give us a clear look at the phone. If we look a bit closer at the camera sensors, the lone one on the right is most likely the telephoto one, due to its squared shape. The Huawei P40 Pro is said to offer 10x optical zoom, according to analyst Ming Chi Kuo.
Along with the Huawei P40 Pro, we could also expect the P40 and maybe a Porsche Edition or even a Max variant of the phones. There’s still time for March, so we should be getting more leaks till the day comes.
