Samsung Galaxy S20+ Camera Features Leaked, Sensor Details of Galaxy S20 Series Phones Also Tipped

Samsung Galaxy S20+ popped up online recently in the form of live images, revealing its design and some notable aspects like a quad rear camera setup and centred hole-punch. Now, details about the camera hardware and features of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series phones have been leaked. The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ are said to pack a 64-megapixel camera, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra will come equipped with a 108-megapixel shooter. Impressively, the Galaxy S20 series phones will let users capture 4K videos at 60fps with both the front and rear cameras. Other leaked camera features include Smart Selfie Angle and Single Take among others.

Noted tipster @Universe has shared details about the camera hardware on each Galaxy S20-series phone, which are listed below:

Samsung Galaxy S20: 12-megapixel + 64-megapixel + 12-megapixel
Samsung Galaxy S20+: 12-megapixel + 64-megapixel + 12-megapixel + ToF sensor
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: 108-megapixel + 48-megapixel + 12-megapixel + ToF sensor.
The camera details revealed by the tipster are a bit different from what we’ve come across in previous leaks and reports. Also, there is no mention regarding the type of sensor, but it appears that the 12-megapixel sensor is a mainstay on all three phones and will act as the main sensor, while the other 12-megapixel sensor will be the wide-angle snapper. However, the role of each camera sensor is not known, especially the high-resolution 108-megapixel and 64-megapixel snappers. Needless to say, process this one with a bit of scepticism.

As for the leaked Galaxy S20+ camera details, they come courtesy of XDA-Developers. As per the report, the primary camera on the Galaxy S20+ is a 12-megapixel unit that employs the Sony IMX555 sensor and has a pixel size of 1.8 micron. The secondary camera is a 64-megapixel unit with an in-house ISOCELL S5KGW2 sensor. The tertiary snapper employs Samsung’s own ISOCELL S5K2LA sensor. The front camera is said to be a 10-megapixel shooter with the Sony IMX374 sensor. Interestingly, the front camera will let users shoot 4K videos at 60fps, just like the main rear camera.

Talking about camera features, the Galaxy S20+ will let users capture 8K videos at 30fps, and this will most likely be available on the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra as well. The rear camera will be able to shoot 4K videos at 60fps backed by OIS and EIS, but it not clear if it will take advantage of Samsung’s new Super Steady OIS technology that made its debut on the Galaxy S10 Lite.

The zoom-in mic feature that allows users to focus on audio from a particular source while recording videos will also be there on the Galaxy S20+. But there will be a couple of new features as well. The first one is Smart Selfie Angle, that prompts the camera app to automatically switch to the wide-angle mode when it detects more than two people in a frame.

The second new, but more interesting feature, on the Galaxy S20+ will reportedly be Single Take. As demoed in the accompanying video above, the phone will automatically capture multiple photos and videos of a subject, and will then recommend the best shots. The Single Take feature also has a custom interface in the gallery. A similar implementation can be seen on Google’s Pixel phones, but they only click multiple still photos of the subject, and not videos.

Another helpful feature on the Galaxy S20 series phones will reportedly be Pro Video. As the name suggests, it will let users take advantage of the Pro mode settings to have more control over video capture. Interestingly, the Director’s View feature that we recently came across in another leak was absent on the Galaxy S20+ unit from which the aforementioned leaks originated. However, it was running pre-release software, so the feature might be available on the stable build when the phone goes on sale following its launch on February 11 at the Galaxy Unpacked event.

Windows 7 Support Ends January 14, Chrome to Offer Windows 7 Support for 18 Months More: What to Do Next

Microsoft’s decade-old operating system – Windows 7 – will reach ‘end of life’ on January 14. This means that the company will stop the free technical support and producing ‘security patches’ to fix software vulnerabilities. It is recommended that all users switch to Windows 10 or newer Windows versions before Windows 7 support ends. While Windows 7 won’t see any support, Google claims that it will keep updating Chrome on Windows 7 devices with software and security patches for 18 more months. This means support for Chrome users on Windows 7 will go on till July next year.

The tech giant is all set to end support for its Windows 7 software next week i.e. on January 14. While the software won’t stop working, Microsoft won’t be delivering any security patches, t hereby making it a breeding ground for hackers to tinker with. The ideal solution, as mentioned, is to update to the latest software. While the free program to update to Windows 10 ended on July 2016, users can purchase the software and install it easily. If you have a genuine copy of Windows 7 installed, you can still download Windows 10 for free by heading to the download page, and installing the Media Creation Tool.

So, what does the January 14 date mean exactly? On its site, Microsoft says “After January 14, 2020, if your PC is running Windows 7, it will no longer receive security updates. Therefore, it’s important that you upgrade to a modern operating system such as Windows 10, which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. In addition, Microsoft customer service will no longer be available to provide Windows 7 technical support. Related services for Windows 7 will also be discontinued over time. For example, certain games such as Internet Backgammon and Internet Checkers as well as Electronic Program Guide for Windows Media Center are scheduled to be discontinued in January 2020.”

However, paid support is still available, and Microsoft notes: “Extended Security Updates (ESU) are available for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Professional for Embedded Systems editions of this product, for up to an additional three years past the end of support.”

Note that Microsoft advises against installing Windows 10 on a very old device, as some Windows 7 devices are not compatible with Windows 10 and could result in reduced feature availability. If you have an old device, consider updating to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 instead. Software support for Windows 8.1 is slated to end on January 10, 2023, so you can buy a few years with that. Users can also alternatively, choose to ditch Window OS altogether, and opt for Linux distros like Ubuntu, Debian, and more.

Microsoft notes that support for Internet Explorer will also end with Windows 7 on January 14, and to compensate for that, Google Chrome has announced that it will support Chrome software updates on Windows 7 devices till July 15, 2021. This is 18 months of additional software support, after Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 next week. “We will continue to fully support Chrome on Windows 7 for a minimum of 18 months from Microsoft’s End of Life date, until at least July 15, 2021. So if you haven’t started your move to Windows 10 yet, or even if your organization is mid-way through migration, you can still benefit from the enterprise capabilities of Chrome,” Google notes on its blog.

Intel ‘Xe’ DG1 GPU for Developers Unveiled at CES 2020, First Intel Discrete Graphics Card But Not for Sale

Intel has unveiled its first discrete graphics card, but you won’t be able to buy one. The unit is for developers only, and will be seeded throughout the industry to allow software makers to get an idea of how to optimise their work for Intel’s new Xe graphics architecture. The card is an implementation of the DG1 GPU, which will be Intel’s first discrete GPU, slated to launch this year. The move shows that Intel is very close to releasing graphics products, although we don’t yet know what form they will take. Intel was quick to emphasise that no conclusions should be drawn from the appearance or performance level of the card being demonstrated, and that it is not necessarily an indication of what any upcoming retail product will be like.

Intel has been on a years-long journey to completely reboot its graphics capabilities. The Xe architecture will find its way into the integrated GPUs within Intel CPUs starting with the 10nm Tiger Lake generation, which is set to launch later this year. Intel has also promised to launch discrete GPUs, and will be targeting all levels from ultra-mobile devices to gaming, workstation, data centre servers, and high-performance acceleration.

The company is not yet ready to disclose timelines, specifications, performance targets, or any other concrete details, but the launch of the developer kit should inspire confidence in the industry. Intel showed the device running gameplay demos at CES, but would not comment on whether or not this represents the performance of a final shipping product. Intel also had laptops with functioning DG1 discrete GPUs at the show, but only shown under glass, and was not offering hands-on demos.

Intel has said that DG1 will be tuned for power efficiency but will be capable of supporting gaming and content creation workloads. The development kit with its dual-slot cooler will of course not be as thermally constrained as a GPU running within a thin-and-light laptop chassis. Software and driver support is also not yet final.

The DG1 kit has a metal shroud with a fairly elaborate design and RGB LEDs for show, but the company would also not comment on whether final shipping products will have the same look. It has three DisplayPorts and one HDMI port, like many consumer graphics cards. Notably, it has no PCIe power connectors, indicating that total power draw is within the 75W that PCIe slots can provide.

Intel began publicising its work on a completely reinvented graphics product stack in 2017, and hired several high-profile executives and engineers from the industry including AMD’s graphics chief, Raja Koduri. The company has been courting gamers and fans through its Odyssey series of events and social media engagements.
